This kitchen remodel is a phase of a much larger project which involved a 4 story addition, whole house remodel and much more. This photo shows the old part of a 100+ year old home in Squirrel Hill. The background area of the original home will eventually become the butler's pantry while the foreground area is newly built addition space to become the main kitchen. This is selective demolition, gutting the space and removing all flooring, plaster from walls and ceiling, exterior wall separating old from new. Many structural changes take place at this stage.

This is the newly constructed addition. Future breakfast room. Marvin Ultimate windows and doors. Advantech subfloor. Modern luxury kitchens have a much larger footprint than the kitchens of the past so additions are quite common during kitchen remodels. That was the case here, so most of the kitchen is within newly built structure.

The architectural intent was to add on to a 100+ year old home and maintain cohesive style while bringing the specs up to modern standards. The addition needed to blend seamlessly into the original structure but feel upgraded. One of the ways that was achieved designing the windows at ceiling height. The Marvin Ultimate series was selected due to their high degree of authentic construction, durability, and customizations. 9ft ceiling height was maintained throughout including the basement. This stage includes all rough in mechanicals, wall board and dry-in features.

The opening at the rear of the breakfast room is waiting for it's wall of glass installation. Directly above the breakfast room is a balcony forming the roof system for the living space which posed unique set of challenges.

Latter stage of stove wall build out. Lower cabinets are virtually completely installed. Refrigeration panels and crown moldings are pending. This photo provides insight to the floating shelf construction. The shelves are 2" solid white oak slabs that extend into the wall cavities. With the perimeter countertops in place we were then able to pinpoint the Zellige tile joints of the backsplash. This was critical since the shelves were to align both horizontally and vertically with the tile joints. The wall outlets also needed to align with the tile joints.
